Is there a highway code for rail ?

Rail has multiple ‘highway codes’, which differ from country to country and type of network. They often include traffic lights or “signals” which tell the train when it must reduce speed, a system of partitioning, dividing the network up into sections called “blocks”, where only one train at a time has the right to be present, and speed signs, indicating the maximum authorised speed that can be safely reached. In high-speed trains, these signals are sent directly to the driver’s instrument panel.
